The Ministry of Industry and Trade is responsible for establishing and enforcing official standards. |
The official standards cover a wide range of imported and domestically produced goods. |
Standards are prepared by committees of the Israel Standards Institute in accordance with the "Standards Regulations" approved by the Minister of Industry and Trade. |
Israeli standards established by the Standards Institute are voluntary. |
The Minister has the authority, following consultation with representatives of producers and consumers, to declare a standard as the official Israeli standard in order to achieve any of the following objectives: |
Protecting public health. |
Protecting public safety.
Environmental protection.
Providing information to the public.
Ensuring the compatibility or substitutability of products.
Preventing economic losses to the consumer from
low-quality building
materials.
Once a standard is declared official, it is prohibited to
produce, sell, import or use
the product unless it meets that standard.
The Director of Standards at the Ministry of Industry and
Trade is responsible
for enforcing the official standards.
The Director or the Director's staff are authorized to
perform inspections in
order to determine whether standards are being met. This authority includes
the
right to take product samples for laboratory testing and the right to
prosecute
violators (through the legal office of the Ministry).
The Director authorizes laboratories to determine whether
products meet the
appropriate standards and to issue inspection certificates.
