The Consumer Products Administration was recently established as a result
of the merger between the Textile and Light Industry Administration and the
Food Industries Administration. The consolidated administration deals with a
broad spectrum of products that are typically finished products ready for
consumer use.

Food industry products include: animal and vegetable products, beverages,
textile inputs, fabrics and cloth, garments and other finished textile products
as well as shoes and leather products. Light industry includes: optics,
office supplies, toys, tapes and discs, Judaica, religious articles, etc.

The Administration deals with every aspect of production, export and import,
standards, quality control and consumerism.

In order for the Administrations to fulfil their functions, they must
maintain ongoing communication with various parties beyond producers and
importers, such as the Food Authority of the Ministry of Health, the
Standards Institute, the Customs Authority, the Ministry of Agriculture, the
Ministry of Labor, the Export Institute and the Kashrut (i.e. kosher
certification) Department of the Chief Rabbinate.

The food and textile industries are the most sensitive to foreign trade.
Commitments undertaken by Israel in the framework of the GATT agreements,
the EU and free trade agreements with the USA and other countries on the
one hand, and the traditional protection enjoyed by these industries in
foreign countries on the other, require continued efforts to ensure fair
competition and prevent discrimination. These activities include the
determination and prevention of dumping, subsidized imports and fighting
discrimination against Israeli goods abroad.

The Administration is also involved in the application of new technologies,
the assessment and evaluation of investment and R&D plans, supervision and
enforcement of regulations to prevent restrictive business practices and
price controls on basic goods.
