Israel Economic &
Trade Office, Israeli Embassy in Thailand
Update News : The AgriTech
2003 has been postponed to 15-18 September, 03
The Economic & Trade Office,
Embassy of Israel in Thailand successfully organized “Israel Agrotechnology”
seminar in Chiangmai (12/Feb/03), Bangkok (03/Mar/03), and another seminar will
be held in KhonKhan on the beginning of May 2003. The objective of the seminar
is to provide information about agricultural technology of Israel, and to
promote the coming event “Agritech 2003” in Tel-Aviv.
1. The seminar in Chiangmai, the
main interests focused on food & fruit preservation from the field to the
shelf, and about chemical in agriculture. There were about 45 attendees, which
are private companies in agricultural field. We expect to have some delegates
from Chiangmai joining the Agritech 2003 exhibition.
2.
With a great cooperation between Economic & Trade Office and Israeli Export
Institute, we had another successful seminar in Bangkok on March 3rd
2003. There were about 60 attendees from private sector and Thai government
sector, and Israeli company representatives. In this special event we had honor
guest speakers joining us as the name mentioned below:
- H.E. Mr. Gershon Zohar: Ambassador of Israel
- Mr. Kanissorn Navanugraha; Deputy Permanent Secretary,
Ministry of Commerce
- Assoc. Prof Opawadee Kemthong: Faculty of Agriculture,
Sukhothai Open University
- Mr. Yitzhak Kiriati: Director, Agrotechnology Israel
Export Institute
5 Israeli companies had
presentation in this particular event and had business meeting with Thai
companies after the seminar as well. The following names are participating
companies.
· Polyon Co., Ltd
· Rotem Co., Ltd
· Polysack Plastic Industries, Ltd
· Ben Zur Nursery Co., Ltd
· Dagan Co., Ltd
3. Israel Export
Institute accompanied with 7 Israeli companies participated in VIV Asia 2003,
during Mar 5- Mar 7 2003 in Bangkok. VIV Asia is an effective way to present
and learn about new products. In this region it is the only specialized trade
exhibition for the pig and poultry industry, with a vast range of international
exhibitors and visitors. The Israeli companies found new business contacts not
only from Thailand but also from India, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
Thai Economic in Brief:
The overall economy
expanded favourably in January. Domestic demand, both private
consumption and private investment, was the main impetus for growth while
external demand, with a particularly high growth of exports this month, also
helped to support the economic expansion. Meanwhile, public spending moderated
as expected.
On the supply side, farm income continued to rise
robustly, due
mainly to increasing major crop prices while crop output recovered after having
contracted late last year as a result of floods. Manufacturing production
grew strongly, especially in domestic-oriented industries. In the service
sector, the number of foreign tourists grew quite well from the same
period last year despite a slight decline from the previous month.
Economic stability was strong on both the domestic and
external fronts. Core inflation remained low, and employment conditions continued
to be favourable. The current account was in surplus; international reserves
remained high; and the stock of external debt continued to decline.
However,
concerns remained over the possible war between the US and Iraq that might
affect Thai tourism and export outlook. Moreover, volatile and rising oil
prices caused the Producer Price Index to rise even though the government had
imposed price control on oil and some consumer products. These effects could
also be aggravated in the event that the war, if it breaks out, becomes a
prolonged war.
