The Standards Institute is a government body that operates under the Standards Law of 1953.
|

The Institute is responsible for preparing standards to ensure the quality and safety of products. The Institute enjoys a high degree of independence since customers who pay for its services finance it. The Institute's policies are determined by public bodies with representatives from industry, public authorities, scientific and research organizations, the Bureau of Engineers, etc.

|
The activities of the Standards Institute are concentrated in three main areas:

Standards, testing (in industry and construction) and the certification of products and quality assurance systems.
|
|
The main services offered by the Israel Standards Institute:
|

|
|
Preparation of standards and specifications (three thousand standards have been published thus far).
|
|
|
Testing the compatibility of products to Israeli or international standards. These tests are performed in the Institute's laboratories and include the following areas: construction and building materials, land and roads, hydraulics and energy, communications, chemicals, food and textiles, electricity and electronics, mechanics and calibration.
|
|
|
The awarding of the Standards Mark (for quality and
safety) and the
Green Mark. More than 1,500 products have so far received these
marks.
|
|
|
Certification of quality assurance systems in industrial
factories and
service organizations according ISO 9000 regulations. So far, 4,000
organizations have received ISO 9000 certification from the Standards
Institute.

|
|
Assistance to exporters regarding information on local
requirements in
target countries and obtaining necessary permits abroad.
|
|
|
Seminars and study days on topics concerning product
quality and the
activities of the Institute.
|
|
|
The Institute is working towards the compatibility of
Israeli standards with those in
Europe and the US and the recognition of foreign standards in the Institute's
certification process.

|
The Institute is a member of the international standards
organizations, ISO and IEC,
and is an active participant in the international standards committees of
these
organizations. The Institute has so far signed 50 mutual recognition
agreements with
various organizations abroad (a full list is available from the Institute).
